Thursday, 9 October - Steep Point

Today we took a day trip to Steep Point, the most westerly point on mainland Australia. The road starts off as a well formed gravel road and gradually morphs into a sandy track going over sand dunes and salt flats. We noticed that the corrugated road takes its toll of vehicles and trailers. On the way in we saw discarded tyres, mudflaps and other vehicle parts as well as a complete boat trailer mudguard.

We aired down a couple of times until we were running 16psi on the sandy tracks. The Steep Point area is spectacular and obviously popular with hard core fishermen.

On the return journey we saw a boat trailer pulled up on the side of the road with a gentlemen standing next to it.  We had a yarn to him and found he had a battered Holden wheel rim off the trailer without a tyre. He said the spare was Ford rim, which doesn't fit, so his mates had gone ahead to find a suitable spare at Steep Point (Doh, there's not much there).  We kept going back to camp and some 14Km further on we found a boat trailer mudguard (a victim of corrugations and metal fatigue) and a shredded tyre. They had driven 14Km on the boat trailer wheel rim without the tyre.  Some 5Km further along we found the other boat trailer mudguard.  That's corrugations for you.  Respect the road and your vehicle and you will get a lot further without problems.

So the boat trailer mud guard score is:-
Useless Loop Road = 3
Fishermen = 1
