Friday, 4 July – Glen Helen Gorge

On the way to Glen Helen Gorge from Alice we stopped off at Simpsons Gap for mornos and Standley Chasm for lunch.

On arrival at the Glen Helen campground we found the vista spectacular but the van sites small and the amenities poorly maintained.

Next day we took an excursion to Ormiston Gorge. Once again the vista was spectacular and now the weather is just as good. Tonight we had our first camp roast on the Cobb accompanied by a few reds while watching the sunset colours play on the gorge walls opposite our campsite.

Our last day based at Glen Helen was used to visit Hermannsburg and Palm Valley as well as a few other scenic spots along the way. The drive into Palm Valley was interesting and a little technical on some very slow sections but uneventful.  Definitely for high clearance 4WD vehicles only.

We arrived back at camp late in the afternoon and then Maree promptly tripped up and sliced her knee open in her enthusiasm to get to the shower. It’s all patched up for now and tomorrow we will visit casualty at Alice.
