Our camp for the night was a free camp beside the Ord River and 5Km west of the Purnululu (Bungle Bungles) national park turn off. There is another free camp opposite the Bungles road but it is very crowded and we like our space so here we are.
We walked down to the almost dry Ord River, across the old highway bridge that would have been in undated by flood waters every wet season and collected camp fire wood. Because there are few fences on the large stations the cattle roam along the highway and around the campground. One horned beast chased Gordo when he was looking for fire wood then Maree thought she saw a 5 legged cow but it turned out to be a lot of bull.
Over the last few days we have heard many horror stories about the 53Km road into Purnululu including ‘it can take 3 to 4 hours’, ‘a tour bus operator recently did 2 tyres in 4 days’ and ‘a bloke had to have his caravan recovered from there at a cost of $2,500’. We also found many people rather than drive in choose to either fly over the NP or go in an off road tour bus.
So that night we enjoyed our campfire and went to bed with some trepidation but determined to drive into Purnululu.
